The origin of id scratch,
the scratch band full of ideas !
1923 : Invention of scotch
In 1923, Richard Drew joined 3M, which at the time produced sandpaper. He noticed that painters had a lot of difficulty in making clear distinctions between two colours when painting cars.
He then had the idea of creating a sticky paper on a roll in order to facilitate the task. In 1925, the first version of his invention was ready, and the adhesive was intended for the edges of the paper, and not the entire side.
Adhesive paper could then be unstuck easily and painters replied: « Take this roller to you stingy bosses and tell them to add more adhesive ».
The word « scotch » was used to mean stingy in American slang, and so Richard Drew would develop, in 1930, a transparent
adhesive tape, the infamous Scotch which we all know today.

1948 : Invention of Velcro
In 1948, Gorges Mestral invented the sticky band when he noticed many burdock flowers stuck to his clothes.
He decided to examine these flowers and found the many tiny hooks which made them up and which allowed for the reversible adhesion of certain materials. He quickly came up with the first sticky band and registered the patent for his idea in 1951.
For an anecdote, Gorges Mestral named his invention
VELCRO, which was an acronym for « velvet » and « crochet ».

2012 : Invention of ID-SCRATCH, the scratch band full of ideas
In 2012, a machine turns at full speed to cut rolls of scratch bands 10m in length. One evening, following a technical incident, hundreds of metres of
scratch band left the machine half cut out every 3 to 4 cm. This defective batch, which could not be sold, was given to the workers.
In the days which followed, Mr Patrice Brunet realised that his workers used all of the
scratch bands for various uses : fixing cables to their work stations, patching up a bike, grouping tools together. Some were so excited, stating that they were « so useful, and could be ripped by hand at any length you like » or « they are solid enough to stick anything you like ».
He then had the idea of manufacturing and selling rolls of scratch band pre-cut into 3cm segments. This then led to the origin of ID-SCRATCH.
Presented for the very first time at the Lyon DIY and Invention Fair, the product won the innovation award…and ID-SCRATCH showed itself to be an essential innovation for daily life… just as SCOTCH and VELCRO.
